Drawing the Architecture of Talent: ATD Houston's 2026 Conference
“There's not a secret to growing better talent faster.
There's a process.”
That line from Marc Effron opened ATD Houston's 2026 Talent Development Conference, and it set the tone for the whole day: less magic, more rigor, and intentional design.

A Talent Strategy Model
Marc Effron's morning workshop introduced his “4+2 Model” — the specific disciplines that separate organizations that build talent on purpose from the ones hoping it happens on its own.
The Core 4 Personas
Business Junkie: Deeply understands, follows, and genuinely loves the business and its financial drivers rather than just focusing inward on HR administration.
HR Disciple: Possesses broad, first-hand functional mastery across major human resource disciplines like compensation, recruiting, and organizational design.
Production Manager: Knows how to build, scale, and consistently execute a reliable talent production process (such as performance reviews and development pipelines).
Talent Authority: Intimately knows the organization’s talent down multiple levels, including granular knowledge of individuals' strengths, weaknesses, and potential.
The Differentiating Two
Trusted Executive Advisor: Provides wise, politically astute counsel that leadership heavily relies upon for critical business and operational choices.
Courageous Advocate: Holds a clear, evidence-based point of view on talent and displays the healthy aggression needed to champion it when stakes are high.
He left the room with a challenge:
"Who are you in the organization today, and what relationship will you have to the strategy set by leadership tomorrow?"
The afternoon then split into three tracks that map almost exactly onto how any complex system actually works:
READY — map what you need before you need it.
BUILD — design and deploy fast, without losing quality.
MAINTAIN — make the gains stick instead of watching them quietly decay.
Capturing the AI Tracks
Peter Durand graphically captured the sessions exploring where AI actually fits into talent development — and where it doesn't.
Jade Williams tackled AI bottlenecks head-on, making the case for keeping humans in the loop exactly where it counts.
Tonya T. Tucker Collins mapped the process from raw data collection to strategic analysis — ask, seek, synthesize, share.
Erica Jenkins showed how AI can help build talent programs that actually last, pairing AI-enabled efficiency with the parts only people can do well.
The Same Problem Every Field Has Right Now
Talent development has the same problem every field has right now…
Everyone agrees something is radically disrupting the old model;
few agree on what to build in its place!
This thoughtful room of training and development professionals had some real answers.
A BIG THANK YOU to ATD President Carol Jennings, President-Elect Janeth Harrison, VP Marketing & Communications Barbara Davis, VP Programs William Brown Houston, and the ATD members who work every day to understand and develop their people.

Catching the Ideas as They Moved
Five graphics, five different speakers, one room working through the same question from five angles: How do you build talent on purpose instead of hoping it happens on its own?
That's exactly the kind of day live illustration earns its keep.
Do you have an event, conference, or vital meeting coming up? Want to explore graphic recording or visual facilitation as an option to increase engagement and drive innovation?
