Killing Me Microsoftly
Chicago Tribune
January 5, 2003
By Julia Keller, Tribune cultural critic

"Almost nobody speaks in public anymore without using Microsoft's PowerPoint. But some liken the program to a cognitive Veg-omatic that slices and dices human thought."

This fantastic article incorporates views on technology and cognition from Marshall McCullen, Sherry Turkle of MIT and elementary school teachers. Wonderfully biting, yet totally on target in it's questioning on the multimedia software that has "revolutionized the worlds of business, education, science and communications, swiftly becoming the standard for just about anybody who wants to explain just about anything to just about anybody else."

A must read for anyone subjected to acres and hours of bullet point lists, all the while thinking to themselves: "What the hell am I doing here?"

Monkey News

"Most genetic sequencing surveys have converged on the conclusion that the genomes of humans and chimpanzees are about 98.7 percent identical. But if humans and chimpanzees are really so similar genetically, why have they turned out to be so different 'in the wild'? Is there something else, biologically, that accounts for our obvious differences? Or are chimpanzees and human beings genuinely the close cousins that the genetic counts suggest, making the differences we notice at the level of the organism little more than skin deep?" ~Carl Zimmer
